Instructions on the aligner
Instructions for Using the Aligner STEPS
- The aligner should be worn for 22 hours daily and removed only when necessary, such as for eating or brushing your teeth, typically 3-4 times a day.
- Patients must be committed to wearing the aligner consistently and maintaining proper care to achieve the desired results.
- Frequent removal and reapplication of the aligner may cause it to lose its flexibility, which could negatively impact tooth movement.
- Maintaining oral hygiene by regularly brushing your teeth and cleaning your aligners is crucial for good oral health.
- While clear aligners are generally more comfortable than metal braces, mild discomfort is common, especially when starting a new set. This is due to the pressure applied to shift your teeth, which typically lessens after a few days.
- Clear aligners have a minimal impact on speech compared to metal braces, thanks to their snug fit.
- Always keep all aligners. If you misplace your current one, either go back to the previous aligner or use the next one if you’ve worn the current aligner for at least five days. Be sure to notify your orthodontist for a replacement.
- You may experience some looseness in your teeth, which is normal during the alignment process. This movement can create small gaps where food may get trapped. In such cases, use floss or an interdental brush to clean between your teeth.
- After completing your aligner treatment, continue wearing the last aligner until your orthodontist evaluates your progress and advises the next steps.
- Teeth take time to stabilize after moving, whether with clear aligners or braces. Retainers—whether fixed or removable—are necessary to hold your teeth in place after treatment. The duration of retainer use depends on your case but generally lasts at least six months.
Removing the Aligner
- To remove the aligner, start at the back and work your way forward. Gently lift the aligner off your back teeth, then move forward until it’s completely removed.
- A removal tool can be helpful, especially in the early stages of treatment, particularly if attachments are involved. Once you get the hang of the removal process, you likely won’t need the tool anymore .
How to Maintain Your Aligner
- Be sure to wash the aligner immediately after removing it. This step is crucial in preventing the buildup of oral bacteria.
- To clean the aligner, you can use effervescent cleaning tablets and a soft toothbrush. Simply submerge the aligner in a container of water, drop in the cleaning tablet, and let it soak for 3 minutes. Afterward, rinse it with water before wearing it again.
- Alternatively, you can clean the aligner by gently brushing it under running water using a soft toothbrush.
- Using a toothbrush and soap is another effective cleaning method. However, avoid colored or scented soaps, as colored soap can stain the clear aligner, and scented soap may leave an unpleasant taste.
- For best hygiene, clean your aligner two to three times daily—just as often as you brush your teeth.
- While it’s fine to drink water with the aligner in place, avoid hot drinks as they can alter the aligner’s structure. Eating while wearing the aligner is also not recommended.
- If you wish to drink anything other than water, remove the aligner to avoid potential discoloration.
- Always clean your aligner with regular or lukewarm water—never hot water.
- Brush your teeth before putting your aligner back in to ensure it contacts clean tooth surfaces, helping maintain fresh breath.
